Questions We Get Asked

What is metal finishing?

🔧 What It Does
 • Improves appearance – makes the surface polished, brushed, hammered, or textured.
 • Adds protection – guards against corrosion, rust, or wear.
 • Prepares surfaces – gets the metal ready for painting, coating, or further treatment.
 • Enhances performance – reduces friction, increases hardness, or provides conductivity depending on the process.

🛠️ What Are Common Types of Metal Finishing
 1. Polishing / Buffing – Creates a smooth, mirror-like shine.
 2. Brushing – Leaves a uniform, directional texture (satin finish).
 3. Hammering / Texturing – Adds depth and tactile patterns.
 4. Electroplating – Coats the metal with another layer (like chrome or nickel).
 5. Powder Coating – Durable colored finish applied electrostatically and baked.
 6. Anodizing – Common for aluminum, enhances corrosion resistance and color.
 7. Patinas – Controlled oxidation that changes color over time (like bronze or brass greens).

What is the turnaround time for finishing work?

Most finishing jobs are completed within 1–2 weeks, depending on complexity and surface area. Rush finishing is available for projects on a tight timeline.

Why is finishing important for metal projects?

Finishing isn’t just about looks - it protects the metal, smooths edges, and extends the life of the part. A good finish makes the difference between a raw cut and a completed piece. There are applications where finishing is not needed for example if the piece is not seen or behind a wall. That being said it is recommended to have your pieces deburred by the Men of Metal for a smooth to the touch result. Deburring is common practice in the world of metal fabrication.

Can finishing be applied to any metal?

Yes. Stainless steel, aluminum, brass, and copper can all be finished. The method depends on the material, thickness, and the final style being targeted.

Are both small items and large projects finished in-house?

Absolutely. From small brackets and panels to full-size components, every piece goes through the same process with attention to detail. Quality control is something we take very seriously and is a primary focus of our finishing department. Every pieces is scrutinized for imperfections and is addressed in finishing.

What is the turnaround time for finishing work?

Fabrication timing depends entirely on project size, quantity of pieces and complexity. For smaller projects, turnaround is as quick as 1-3 days. For quantity based orders and larger volume lead time will be given with your quote. We do offer priority fabrication options depending on our current workload and availability of materials.
